Cancun is as sunny and beautiful as it is famous- and if you’re going there on vacation, you’ve got a long list of activities to check off. While a long walk on its pristine beaches is certainly a good idea- that’s far from a comprehensive plan for getting around this historic, tropical paradise. To see it all in Cancun, renting a vehicle is the way to go.
Renting a car is almost certainly the best way to see the Riviera. But there are a few things you should know first.
Driving in South America is not like driving in the US or Canada. It’s a bit more hectic, with drivers following local conventions more than standardized traffic laws. If you’ve never driven south of the border before, it can take some getting used to. Know that road signs will be in Spanish. It can be a challenge to get a car that doesn’t have mechanical problems. One way to get around this is to rent from the airport. Renting a car in Mexico typically includes an insurance package. If you choose to forgo optional insurance packages, a hold will most likely be placed on your credit card.
Traveling in and around Cancun is a unique experience with lots of things to do and see. Depending on your vacation preferences, typically a hybrid, luxury sedan, large van, or sporty convertible will ideal. If you’re going to be on the road a lot, a gas-saving hybrid might be a good idea. If seeing the Riviera in style is your thing, a luxury sedan might be in order. If you’re traveling with the whole family or a tour group, you’ll probably need a mini or full-size van. Or if feeling the tropical wind in your hair suits your fancy, a performance convertible may be more your style.
Unless you’re staying for a whole season, you’re going to have to prioritize your sightseeing list. Visit stunning historical sights like the Ik Kil Cenote river caves, climb the majestic steps of the Aztec pyramid in Chichen Itza, or visit the mysterious Underwater Museum. If you have something more festive in mind, consider the Isla Mujeres Catamaran Tour, or just enjoy margaritas on the beach.
There are dozens of attractive tour packages, 5-star restaurants, and limitless ways to enjoy Cancun. You just have to see it for yourself!
